Job Summary

 

The Construction Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing laboratory and field testing of construction materials to ensure compliance with approved specifications, international standards, and project quality requirements. The technician supports quality control activities through sampling, testing, recording, and reporting of construction materials.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Perform, calculate and report soil testing including Proctor tests, field density test moisture content, Atterberg limits, specific gravity test, grain size analysis, and CBR tests.
  • Conduct, calculate and report aggregate testing including sieve analysis, abrasion test, crushing value, soundness test and water absorption tests.
  • Perform, calculate and report cement testing such as fineness, consistency, setting time, soundness, and compressive strength tests.
  • Conduct, calculate and report reinforcement steel testing including tensile strength, yield strength, bend tests, and dimensional verification.
  • Perform, calculate and report concrete testing including slump test, temperature, air content, cube/cylinder preparation, and compressive strength testing.
  • Verify concrete admixture certificates and storage conditions.
  • Assist QA/QC in admixture trial mix verification.
  • Support trial mixes and concrete mix design verification under engineer supervision.
  • Monitor batch plant production consistency and conduct daily QC tests.
  • Report test failures immediately to QA/QC Engineer.
  • Assist QA/QC team in site inspection of compaction, concrete pouring, curing, and sampling frequency.
  • Ensure sampling and testing frequency is performed as per ITP and standards.
  • Ensure all testing instruments are calibrated and valid before use.
  • Maintain calibration schedule and coordinate third-party calibration.
  • Maintain daily laboratory logbook.
  • Maintain test registers and traceability (sample ID linked to location, pour number, delivery note, batch ticket).
  • Submit daily/weekly QC summary reports to QA/QC Engineer.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness, chemical storage, and inventory of consumables.
  • Maintain sample retention system (sample storage and tracking).
  • Support NCR documentation and corrective action verification.
  • Collect and properly label construction material samples.
  • Maintain laboratory testing equipment and calibration records.
  • Prepare laboratory testing reports and maintain documentation.
  • Support QA/QC team in implementing inspection and test plans (ITPs).
  • Ensure compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, BS, and project specifications.
  • Follow laboratory safety and environmental procedures.

 

Job Requirements

 

1.    Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Geology, or related field.

 2.    Experience Requirement.

 

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in construction materials testing or laboratory operations.
  • Experience in industrial or cement plant projects is preferred.
  • Familiarity with batching plant quality control is an advantage.
  • Candidate should have basic familiarity with concrete mix design.

 

3.    Required Skills

 

  • Good knowledge of construction material testing standards.
  • Ability to use MS Excel for calculations and reporting.
  • Ability to read technical standards and test procedures.
  • Ability to maintain organized documentation for audits.
  • Strong attention to detail and reporting skills.
  • Ability to work both in laboratory and field conditions.
  • Good teamwork and communication skills.
  • Language Requirement
  • Basic to intermediate English language skills are require

4.    Language Requirement

  • Basic to intermediate English language skills are required.
  • Strong Dari/Pashto communication is required.
